Getting Started
Who is Chemistry Unlocked for?
Chemistry Unlocked is for students studying GCSE Chemistry or Combined Science, and for their teachers. Students can use it independently to reinforce what they’re learning in class or to structure their revision. Teachers can also use it in school settings: each topic is a ready-made, computer-based lesson with built-in assessment. Teachers can set work or cover, and track student outcomes via self-marking quizzes.
What’s different about Chemistry Unlocked?
Chemistry Unlocked is created by experienced Chemistry teachers with PhDs and GCSE examining experience. We take a maximalist approach — expanding on every detail, with clear examples and plenty of repetition. We make the subject more accessible by delivering content in ways that support students who may struggle with reading for understanding. It’s available 24/7 on any connected device.
Is Chemistry Unlocked free?
Topic 1 is available completely free — permanently. The full course (covering all 10 topics) will be available via subscription from September 2025. Students and parents will be able to subscribe individually. Schools can purchase an institute licence, which includes access for all KS4 students, their teachers, and a department manager.
How do I access Topic 1 for free?
Just set up a free account. We only collect the minimum information needed to create a username and password. It’s also helpful for us to know your role — for example, teacher, student, parent, or subject leader.
Are there teacher accounts?
Yes. Schools with an institute licence will have accounts for teachers and a subject manager. Teachers can set and monitor work, view quiz results, and access all content for lesson use. Subject managers can see student progress across all classes and manage teacher access.
How do I use Chemistry Unlocked in a mixed-ability set?
It’s easy. When your school buys a licence, we’ll help set up accounts for your students, grouped by class. You’ll also select their course and tier (Combined or Separate Chemistry, Foundation or Higher). Each resource is tagged for its suitability for these options, so students only see content appropriate for their level — even when working side by side in a mixed group.
What is Check My Progress?
The scores students achieve in multiple choice tests are recorded. When the product launches in September, students will be able to use the Check My Progress function to monitor how they are doing in these tests. They can get data on individual tests, their progress by topic, in paper 1 or paper 2 and across the whole course. They can take each test as often as they like and see their score improving. Check my Progress functionality is included with a paid account.
I can only see Topic 1. Where’s the rest of the course?
Topic 1 is freely available now. The rest of the course will be released in September 2025 as part of the full subscription package.
How much does it cost?
Subscriptions are not yet available. Pricing will be published at the start of the new school year.

Is there an app?

Can students access the site on a phone or tablet?
Yes. Chemistry Unlocked is fully responsive and works on all devices — desktop, laptop, tablet, or smartphone.
Can I print the worksheets and quizzes?
Yes. All worksheets and quizzes can be downloaded and printed for offline use, including those in Topic 1.
Is the content aligned with a specific exam board?
Yes. Chemistry Unlocked follows the AQA GCSE Chemistry specification in detail. Much of the content will also be useful for students studying other specifications.
Can I share the Topic 1 content with colleagues?
Absolutely — please do! Topic 1 is free and open for anyone to explore.
